Shady Lane Farm and Bluenote Garden Flower

Suzanne DeMuth and Bob Hoover

Macedon, NY

Both of us worked for many years in research and education in sustainable and organic agriculture when we lived in Maryland (prior to 2006). While there, we also grew specialty Asian vegetables for market.

Our goal is to grow healthful, nutritious vegetables, with long-term sustainability as a guiding principle. We use ecological and organic growing methods, and make every effort to limit use of fossil-fuel energy and conserve resources. We use farm-made composts to improve soil health, and apply biodegradable mulches to suppress weeds and conserve water. We avoid using synthetic chemical pesticides and instead control insects and other pests with botanical products, with mechanical barriers, and by encouraging beneficial insects.

We grow a number of vegetables not typically available at local markets, including edamame soybeans, sweet potatoes, and several specialty lettuces and greens, including some heirloom varieties. We also grow many types of cut flowers, also without chemical pesticides, and offer pre-arranged bouquets at modest prices. We sell only produce that we have grown ourselves.
